Take Me Back Home

Bruce Lee, Denali Park, Alaska A wildlife tour guide at Denali Park for the last 10 years, 45 year old Bruce Lee came to Alaska in 1976 following college in Michigan. Bruce says he acquired his first dogs shortly after his arrival in Alaska to do winter camping and travel in Alaska. For five years he and Jeralyn lived in the Kobuk River Valley where sled dogs were their sole means of winter travel. He grew interested in racing because he wanted to see how his dogs compared to those in other kennels and to "join into the competition and strategy of racing." His first race was the Yukon Quest in 1986. He ran his first Iditarod in 1992 and has now finished the Iditarod 3 times. He’s also been an Iditarod race judge twice. "I enjoy running the Iditarod because of the variety of country the race goes through and all the details the race course throws at me and because of the support so many people along the trail put into the event. Currently they keep a kennel of about 50 dogs. They breed and raise most of their own dogs, and both Jeralyn and Bruce train them for the racing season. Bruce is expecting an exciting race this year "because we have a new team of young dogs." This will be the team’s debut race and Bruce looks forward to racing with them. Bruce enjoys kayaking in his free time. He and Jeralyn have no children.

Joe LeFaive, Glennallen, Alaska Joe was born in Minnesota and moved to Alaska in 1969. He is employed by the Alaska Fish & Game in the sport fish division. Joe began mushing in 1984 and ran his first Iditarod in 1986. Joe also competed in the Hope 92 Race, the Moose Creek 200 and many other mid-distance races. He enjoys hunting and fishing and working with wood. He also likes to read when time permits. "I really enjoy the dogs, they are great friends and wonderful traveling companions. They understand Alaska and racing even though many people do not." Joe makes his home in Gakona, Alaska
