Transportation
Traveling around Alaska can be accommodated in a variety of ways. Rental car and RV agencies are available in the major towns and can be a nice way to get around and explore on your own.The road system is a good but only covers a small percentage of the state. Private rail & bus lines can take you to some of the most popular tourist destinations in comfort and with the state owned Alaska Railroad whistle stops are alive and well and living in the "Last Frontier". Let the engineer know where you want to get off or flag down the train when you want to get on. This is a popular way of traveling with the locals and hunting and fishing seasons are high volume times for travel. Major airlines and commuter lines can take you into more traveled areas but a majority of Alaska is remote and traveling to the "out of the way places" requires more creative transportation and planning. If remote is what you are looking for then remote is where the bush pilots and captains can take you. Few places in Alaska are so remote that there isn't someone willing to get you there, weather permitting.
