As of July 2008, 48th Avenue is now Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

The MOA is proposing an extension of 48th Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue) that will parallel Tudor Road and provide access to future development in the 3500 Tudor area. This road would connect the intersection of Boniface Parkway to the intersection of 48th Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue) and Elmore Road and would provide improved connectivity to Abbott Loop and Dowling Road. This important road link was identified in the East Anchorage Study of Transportation and the MOA Long Range Transportation Plan to provide much needed east/west connectivity through Anchorage. This project will enhance transportation system connectivity, improve traffic circulation and reduce congestion at the Lake Otis Parkway and Tudor Road intersection. Construction began in 2008 and is expected to be completed in 2010.

In addition, a 48-inch water transmission main has been routed within the roadway corridor. The construction of the roadway and the AWWU water main will occur in different phases.

Construction resumed in February on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. Updates will be provided to users for the duration of the project regarding trail closures and detours.

The original Campbell Creek Trail is now officially closed. Users are encouraged to use the Tour of Anchorage Trail and the detour along Elmore Road to access trails.

Below are the proposed trails along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and a graphic showing the The Tour of Anchorage Trail passing underneath the roadway.

Other components of the proposed action include:
  New storm drain facilities,
Signal upgrades at Boniface Parkway/Tudor Road,
New signal at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Elmore Road,
New pedestrian facilities and trail connections,
  Street lighting, and
  Landscape enhancements.
